Comment on Blog Posts Without Concern!?

edit-your-comment

What concerns might occur to us when we comment on blog posts?
Let’s see:
– Do I actually have something to say?
– Am I forgetting anything?
– Is my comment making sense?
– What if my spelling or grammar is wrong?

You know the helplessness feeling when you hit Post Comment on blog posts and you realize you should’ve fixed or added something, but you can’t? Yes, that’s true for most blogs and it’s an annoying shortcoming, at least that’s how I see it. Luckily the basic functionality can be changed to our needs, and WordPress is renowned for its flexibility.

I had seen months ago a blog (sorry, can’t remember which one), that allowed people to edit their comments for a few minutes after posting them. I thought it was a fantastic addition, but naturally I became distracted by a different task and forgot about it.

Until recently, when I re-discovered the plugin on Tim Linden’s blog. I wasn’t going to let it pass again, and I immediately looked for a way to implement it.

Turned out there are a number of WordPress plugins to do the trick, I chose a very simple one which does exactly what needed: Simple Comment Editing.

The plugin won’t help if your mind goes blank when you’re asking of it to come up with something to write, but it will help if you notice a typo or just want to add or remove something from your comment. And that I find of great help! I hope you too.

  1. Thanks Adrian I can’t count how many times I’ve embarrassed myself with spelling or grammatical mistakes and then saw my comments publish with alarm and dismay.

  2. Oh, Nick, I must be a champion at spelling and grammar errors, and the fact that I don’t speak English natively is just an excuse. Noticing my own (un-editable) errors is embarrassing, but doesn’t stop me. Thanks for dropping by!

  5. Where we can blog or write comments and then correct our mistakes is in Facebook.
Sometimes you just post something and then reread it. While the main thing is reading something first before posting it.
    ;)

  6. Yes, I always try to re-read my comments before I hit “post”. While I may not see all mistakes, I’ll correct the most obvious ones (to me). And since many blogs don’t offer the possibility to edit your comment, it’s probably a good practice. And yes, we can edit our posts on Facebook, maybe we should start adding this small feature to our own blogs.

Adrian, I think you are correct in your thinking that nearly everyone makes mistakes.
What I find useful: re-read before you click!
Oh, by the way, believe it or not, I make mistakes too.

  8. LOL Gary, what do you mean “nearly” everyone? Are you saying there’s a man or woman who is perfect? I’d like to meet them! On second thought, maybe I wouldn’t like to meet them. :)

I comment on blogs a lot and I always check my comment for mistakes.I sometimes do not see the grammar mistakes but I am a pretty good speller. If I do make a mistake, hopefully there is an edit button.

  10. Thank you for your comment, Tony.
